Introduction to HakiElimu
HakiElimu is an independent civil society organization dedicated to human rights and education. The organization, founded in 2001, works to transform education by influencing policy, stimulating public dialogue, conducting research, and collaborating with partners. Their vision is an open, just, and democratic Tanzania where everyone has the right to an education that promotes equity, creativity, and critical thinking. HakiElimu is seeking its fourth executive director to build on past achievements and bring new energy to the organization’s work.
Overall ResponsibilityThe Executive Director (ED) is the leader of the organization and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, guiding staff, and ensuring that HakiElimu’s systems and practices are effective, transparent, and accountable. The ED engages with external actors to further the organization’s objectives6. A critical part of the role is fundraising by cultivating relationships with key global and regional partners. The ED’s authority comes from their trustworthy character, integrity, and credibility with civil society, government, and funder communities.
Experience & Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a Tanzanian with at least ten years’ experience leading initiatives that involve the government, civil society organizations, and citizens. A master’s degree is strongly preferred, but exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree will be considered. The candidate should have a track record of engaging with high-level civil society and government leaders, and demonstrated experience securing funding and forging alliances to advance strategic goals. The role requires excellent communication skills in both Swahili and English.
